Block Print Cotton (Mulmul) Curtains from India Craft Bazaar

Block print mulmul curtains from India Craft Bazaar is exquisitely handwoven and hand printed by the expert artisans from Rajasthan. Mulmul is a term used for traditional Indian Handloom Fabrics. Mulmul is fine cotton fabric, which is slightly heavier than muslin. This type of fabric is a unique weaving heritage of India.

Woodblock printing is a technique for printing text, images or patterns used widely throughout East Asia and originating in China in antiquity as a method of printing on textiles and later paper. Block printing by hand is a slow process. It is, however, capable of yielding highly artistic results, some of which are unobtainable by any other method. India is one of the largest manufacturers and exporters of block printed fabric in the world. Block printing craftsmen use wooden or metal blocks to create beautiful designs; sometimes, linoleum blocks are also used.

There are 3 major types of wood block print; 1)Direct Printing : In this technique, the cotton or silk cloth is first bleached. Then the fabric is dyed, unless a light background is desired. Thereafter, the fabric is printed using carved blocks, first the outline blocks, then the ones to fill colour. 2)Resist Printing : In the resist technique, areas that are to be protected from the dye are covered with a mixture of clay and resin. The dyed fabric is then washed. The dye spreads into the protected areas through cracks, producing a rippled effect. Block prints are then used to create further designs. 3) Discharge Printing : In this technique, the fabric is dyed. Then, a chemical is used to remove the dye from the portions that are to have designs in a different colour. These portions are then treated, so they may be re-coloured.

In India, Gujarat (Sodagiri, Ajrakh & Kutch ), Rajasthan (Sanganer, Bagru, Sikar & Shekhawati), Punjab (Chimba style), West Bengal (Sreerampur), Andhra Pradesh (Kalamkari) and Madhya Pradesh (Bagh print) are the major centres of wood block print.

Care & Maintenance Tips

  1. Mulmul is a fine fabric which needs gentle care
  2. Ideally these curtains are to be dry-cleaned only for maintaining their colour and lustre. However hand wash with mild soap is can be done if dry cleaning is not possible
  3. Curtains are not to be washed very frequently and never should be dried in direct sunlight (drying in shade is best)
  4. Natural dye bleeds a little, when washed for the first time
  5. These curtains are best used as sheer curtains

Block Print Trivia

Sanganer Block Print was one of the major export items for the East India Company, and its trademark was the original dye used for printing designs. This dye soon became a matter of significance in European culture as well.
